Atlanta’s music scene is mourning the sudden death of platinum-selling rapper Rich Homie Quan. The 34-year-old, born Dequantes Lamar, passed away on Thursday (September 5) at his Atlanta home, as confirmed by his family and a representative from the Fulton County morgue.
No official cause of death has been released, but fellow rapper Boosie BadAzz claimed on social media that Quan died of anoverdose.
Rich Homie Quan, best known for his hit singles “Type of Way” and “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh),” was a key figure in Atlanta’s hip-hop scene. Rising to fame in 2013, he became a fan favorite with tracks like “Ride Out” and his collaborations with Young Thug on the Rich Gang project. Over the years, Quan worked closely with Atlanta icons like 2 Chainz and Jacquees.
Tributes began pouring in as news of his death spread on social media. Jacquees, who worked with Quan on hits like “Come Thru (Remix),” shared a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter) before later deleting it. “Man my brother Quan was one of dem ones and responsible for so much s### man,” Jacquees wrote. “I love you bru…Forever, I ain’t cried in forever bru…this one HURT FR…”
Boosie BadAzz also took to Twitter, expressing shock over the loss: “JUST TALKED TO YOU BRA. Never forget yo smile n the way you talked n course yo music.”
Just two months before his passing, he released his latest single, “Ah’chi,” featuring longtime collaborator 2 Chainz. 2 Chainz also shared a tribute, saying, “Dam lil brother, we just spoke about shooting a video. Special prayer for you and your family.”
As the hip-hop community grapples with the tragic news, tributes continue to flood in from fans and peers alike. Grammy-winning producer 9th Wonder added his voice to the chorus of condolences, tweeting, “Such a fan of this guy. Did not get the flowers he deserved for being one of the innovators for a whole new lane. Rest easy, lil bruh @richhomiequan.”
