According to many reports, Debbie resides in the small town of St. Joseph, Missouri, where she runs a bakery and operates a taxi service company. Locals describe her as friendly and active in the community, attending local events and staying connected with her neighbors. While she’s largely avoided the spotlight, Debbie remains engaged in day-to-day life, focusing on her businesses.

A Look Back at the Past

Debbie Mathers, born on October 10, 1955, in Auburn Hills, Michigan, is perhaps best known for her tumultuous relationship with her son, Eminem.

A descendant of English and German heritage, Debbie endured a challenging upbringing, marked by her parents’ alcoholism and frequent disputes. This turbulent environment contributed to her own struggles with anxiety, depression, and substance abuse.

In the early 1980s, Debbie met Marshall Mathers Jr., Eminem’s father, and they married soon after. However, their relationship was chaotic and eventually ended in divorce in 2001. Debbie later remarried in 1998 to John Briggs and now has three grandchildren. Since her split from Marshall, she has mostly stayed out of the public eye.

Debbie’s relationship with Eminem became a subject of widespread public interest following the release of songs like “Cleanin’ Out My Closet,” where he detailed the alleged abuse and neglect he experienced during his childhood. These lyrics painted a picture of a strained relationship that captured the attention of millions.

While she has not given any interviews in recent years, Debbie did speak to Rolling Stone in 2000 about her relationship with her son. “I would like to see him more, but he’s so busy,” she said. “I’m proud of what he’s accomplished.”

Debbie Mathers gave birth to Eminem in Kansas City when she was just 18-years-old. The rapper had a perturbed childhood and was often at loggerheads with his mother due to the absence of his father, Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr., who abandoned them not long after Eminem was born. Debbie battled with addiction and it affected her relationship with Eminem (born Marshall Bruce Mathers III) who would go on to rap about it on his songs.

On “My Name Is,” the opening track of his 1999 album The Slim Shady LP. Eminem claimed his mother did “more dope than” he did: “I told her I’d grow up to be a famous rapper / Make a record about doin’ drugs and name it after her.”

Debbie responded to her son’s allegations by suing him for $11 million, claiming defamation of character. Debbie was awarded a $25,000 settlement in 2001, but $23,354.25 of that went to her attorney.

Though Eminem continued to have harsh words for his mother. He acknowledged her abusive behaviors towards him were a result of her Munchausen syndrome— a disorder in which a caregiver makes up an illness or injury in a person under their care.

“Now I would never diss my own momma just to get recognition. Take a second to listen for who you think this record is dissing but put yourself in my position. Just try to envision witnessing your momma popping prescription pills in the kitchen, B——- that someone’s always going through her purse and s—- missing, going through public housing systems, victim of Munchhausen’s Syndrome. My whole life I was made to believe I was sick when I wasn’t ‘til I grew up, now I blew up. It makes you sick to ya stomach. Doesn’t it?”

Eminem Makes Peace With Debbie Mathers

With time Eminem was able to understand his mother’s actions, and was a bit more sympathetic towards her. He officially made pace with Debbie in a 2013 music video for “Headlights” and switched the blame to his absentee father. He apologized to his mother and questioned if he had taken his resentment “too far.”

“But I’m sorry mama for ‘Cleanin’ Out My Closet,’ at the time I was angry,” Eminem wrote in the song. He later adds, “I don’t hate you ’cause, Ma
You’re still beautiful to me, ’cause you’re my Ma.”

While their relationship still remains complicated, Debbie congratulated Eminem after he was inducted into the 2022 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

‘Marshall, I want to say, I could not let this day go by without congratulating you on your induction into the Hall of Fame.’

She continued: ‘I love you very much. I knew you’d get there. It’s been a long ride. I’m very, very proud of you.’
