The hip-hop world is in mourning following the tragic death of Chino XL. The revered rapper, known for his intricate wordplay and unflinching honesty, reportedly passed away at the age of 50 on Monday, (July 29).
In a joint statement shared on his official Instagram account, his daughters reflect on his passing: “Our father had many titles – King of Punchlines, Puerto Rican Superhero – but the most important one was Girl Dad. And what he gave us most in that role was his strength, straightforwardness, and ability to be super realistic. The main thing we are feeling now is that our Dad is at peace, and so we are at peace.”
The family asks for privacy at this time. Details of a memorial will be forthcoming.
The Cause of Death
Chino XL’s death came as a shock to fans and fellow artists alike. According to Allhiphop, the rapper, born Derek Emmanuel Barbosa, took his own life after a long battle with depression, a tragic end to a life that had impacted so many through music.
It should be noted that the official cause of death remains unknown, and the family has not yet spoken publicly. It’s best to respect their wishes and refrain from speculation at this time.
Born on April 8, 1974, in the Bronx, Chino XL’s career was marked by his exceptional talent for lyrical complexity and his fearless approach to addressing social issues, personal struggles, and industry conflicts. From his debut album “Here to Save You All” to his subsequent releases, including “I Told You So” (2001) and “Poison Pen” (2006). Chino XL carved a niche for himself as one of the most respected and critically acclaimed rappers in the underground scene.
Beyond music, he also made his mark as an actor, appearing in shows like Reno 911! and CSI: Miami.
Prior to his death, Chino XL was a guest on Rakim’s album, G.O.D.’S NETWORK – REB7RTH which was released on July 25, mentioning that it was a dream come true for him.

Following the announcement of his death, tributes from artists, fans, and industry professionals began to pour in.
Fellow rapper A-F-R-O posted a tribute to Chino XL on on social media just minutes after the news started to spread. He wrote, “RIP to CHINO XL .. I’m gonna miss you, big bro.”
Public Enemy’s Chuck D called the late musical artist his ‘brother in rhyme & Art’
“CHINOXL was my brother in rhyme & Art. He encouraged my graphics forward. We exchanged art books. He looked out to protect my lyric books better.”
Chuck D added that Chino XL supported his events, and he supported his music.
UGK legend Bun B expressed his deep sorrow, calling Chino XL a “man of the people” with a “heart of pure gold.” Other artists like Joe Budden, KXNG Crook, and R.A. The Rugged Man have have also shared heartfelt condolences.
Chino is survived by his children, Chynna, Bella, Lyric, Kiyana; his stepson Shawn; grandchildren Emmy, Emery, Chris, Luis, and Dyani; his mother, Carole; and his former longtime partner Stephanie.
