Legendary hip-hop hype man Fatman Scoop, born Isaac Freeman III, has tragically passed away at the age of 53.

Scoop collapsed during a performance at Hamden Town Center Park in Connecticut on Friday, August 30th. Despite immediate medical attention, including CPR and transportation to a nearby hospital, Scoop was unable to recover.

The news of his passing was confirmed by his family, who posted a heartfelt tribute on Instagram Saturday morning. “It is with profound sadness and very heavy hearts that we share news of the passing of the legendary and iconic Fatman Scoop,” the statement reads. “Last night, the world lost a radiant soul, a beacon of light on the stage and in life.”

The family described him as more than just a performer; he was a father, brother, uncle, and friend who brought joy and laughter into their lives. While they mourn his loss, they also celebrate Fatman Scoop’s remarkable life and the legacy he leaves behind. “His joy was infectious, and the generosity he extended to all will be deeply missed but never forgotten,” the statement concluded.

Hamden Mayor Lauren Garrett also confirmed the rapper’s death on Facebook, expressing her condolences to Scoop’s family and friends. “He was a wonderful performer with a wide following, as evidenced by the thousands of fans who came to see what would be his last performance at Hamden Town Center Park,” Garrett wrote. She also announced that grief counseling would be available for those affected by the tragedy.

Scoop’s DJ and tour manager, Birch “Pure Cold” Michael, shared his sorrow and gratitude for the time they spent together. “I am honestly lost for words,” Michael wrote. “You took me all over the world and had me performing alongside you on some of the biggest and greatest stages on this planet. The things you taught me have truly made me the man I am today. Thank you so much, I love you.”

Although the official cause of deathhas not been confirmed, Fatman Scoop’s family hopes that he will be remembered for his love, brightness, and the countless lives he touched.

Fatman Scoop’s career was defined by his energetic and infectious presence, making him a highly sought-after collaborator in the hip-hop industry. He was best known for his guest appearances on tracks like Missy Elliott’s “Lose Control” and Mariah Carey’s “It’s Like That,” as well as his breakout song “Be Faithful,” released in 1999.

Beyond his musical career, Scoop was a beloved radio personality on New York’s Hot 97 and hosted television shows like Celebrity Big Brother. He also mentored young musicians on the U.K. series Chancers.
